Corbin's Review:
I went to the UPS on Cambie and 19th, asked questions and got samples. The employee I dealt with was averagely friendly, but slightly odd. I figured that UPS would be at the bottom of the pile in terms of quality and price. The first assumption was correct but the second wasn’t, as can be seem in the spreadsheet.
UPS provides few options. They only do digital, they can do Pantone but it is sent away, they offer black printing and two color printing-whereas the other companies just pretty did full on one side or both- because most people want pictures and lots of things on their cards.
UPS’s cliental mostly consists of small business owners who design their own cards so UPS helps them with that process, giving sheets explaining bleeds and margins to aid with the design.
UPS didn’t have the quality and options that the other printers had and also their price is pretty high in comparison.
I also have been dealing with Green Printers. I came across their website while on the surf. I liked them because of their commitment to reducing their and their industries environmental footprint. They also have a really great website with lots of information and real time quotes which is nice. They are a large printing company throughout the US and Canada. They use recycled paper and vegetable based inks. They appear to be an internet based company.
I requested samples a while ago and to my surprise someone phoned me and we talked for a while and I got to tell him what I wanted. Unfortunately they have not come yet. But that is my fault.
As can be seen, surprisingly, their prices are much cheaper than the competitors, which surprised me because usually “green” products are more expensive. What I liked is the fact that they are green, but I’m not crazy about not being able to deal face to face with the printer. And their offset work is much more expensive than the competitors.
In conclusion I have realized you pay for quality and when printing use companies who specialize in one area, don’t use people that spread themselves to wide. For example I figured the offset work of A J printing would be very expensive because they have higher end customers and do higher end work. But, it was nearly the cheapest for offset and I’m sure the quality would be great. They also said that if there is a problem before the work hits the presses they will let the designer know, which I’m sure is extremely valuable in a printer. Laurie asked them what makes them different from the other printers and the owner said customer service.

Review:
We just dropped in there and the guy was really friendly and super helpful. He answered all of our questions in detail and explained the samples that they have laid out. They have lots of examples of the kinds of print jobs they do, everything from business cards to posters to magnets and temporary tattoos.
The aesthetics of the store is really well thought out and is seemly geared towards graphic designers and artists. They also sell little knick-knacks and Pantone colour guides.

Review:
Really nice and super eager to help. Most of their clientele are graphic designers and they pride themselves on providing high quality work and will not send out jobs that don’t meet their (and your) satisfaction. They will contact you right away if they think something is not right. AJ mostly does digital printing, they are able to do offset but don’t see as many jobs as they used to. They don’t do thermography printing and told us that they don’t even know of anyone who does it anymore. Their old contacts do not exist anymore.

Moo Cards

www.moocards.com

Online printer that offers customized full colour, digitally printed business cards on thick 16pt cards or 13pt 100% recycled paper.

Review:
Moo Cards print beautiful cards that are thick and matte laminated. There are two different sizes, the standard 2”x 3.5” or MiniCards that are 1.25”x 2.75”. They are affiliated with flickr and you can upload images straight off your flickr site or send in your artwork. Shipping is an additional $27 and then there is tax so it does end up getting a little pricey but if you keep an eye on the site or on your flickr, there are usually deals on shipping

Digital
He didn’t recommend digital printing for letterheads since the toner, which is already on the paper may melt because of the heat when it goes through machine again.
